Little Mama
64Rescued cats and kittens
A poem for feral cats and kittens
Little mama, trying to stay alive
Little mama, desperately wants to survive
Baby mama, just a child yourself
Little mama, who will help?
Hungry and tired, weary to the bone
Poor little thing, no rest for this one
Fragile young thing who has no home
Little mama, who will help?
So small, so weak, nowhere to be safe
So frightened, so meek, nowhere to escape
From danger so close, always around
Little mama, could I help you,
If you can be found?
Little mama, little mama, lay your head down
Little mama, be quiet and you will be found
We’ll search and we’ll seek ‘till dawn, if we must,
Little mama, little mama…please know you can trust
Our hands will not hurt you
Ours voices will sooth you
In love will you be
If’ you’ll just let us see
You,
Wandering alone, a dark and cold night
Searching for food, so that you might
Nurture your babies; so small and so frail
Just a matter of time; you must find a meal
Little mama, with babies; a babe she is yet
Little mama with kittens; soon now, you'll forget
The harshness of days and nights with no pity
Come, come to me now…won’t you be my kitty?
A clean bed with warmth, and enough food
Fresh water and comfort will do you good
We'll save you, Little Mama, and your babies as well
Take you away from the streets;
Away from this Hell
Tiny little thing; you no longer must roam
Little Mama, sweet mama, you now have a home
.

Beautiful poem, cute pictures!
Oh that video just made my morning shine, so tender and sweet. Your poetry is beautiful. Thank you.
Cheers
Cute pictures and nice video.
This brings back memories of the mama kitty I rescued one bitter winter. She survived with flying colors and brought back four adorable babies in the Spring. Sadly, I had no choice in leaving them behind in saving myself. I wish I had known you, then, Lucky Cats, because I know together we would have found a solution. I was appalled at the crass ability that every single person I approached to help me in some small way to ensure their safety, so easily turned away. Neighbors who consider themselves "good" people would not even continue to put out food I wanted to buy for them. My ex, who not once helped me with our own Golden Retriever, Leo, not even to give us a ride to his final vet appointment, was a lost cause. He chose to "go to breakfast" with his daughter that morning, not even saying goodbye to Leo. I find it bitterly ironic that filling his own face was top priority, but he had no empathy if a hungry animal approached. I left when I could no longer stand to look at his face, because there was nothing there other than the next beer he was sucking down. The crisis that exists today with abandoned, homeless animals doesn't have to be. But, it will continue without more human beings like you, Kathy, that see beyond their own needs and realize how much hunger hurts. And, critters don't require the inordinate meal prep time and expense that my ex did. I know and it became a battle justifying my efforts to him in providing what I could to feed those animals that wandered into my life. Selfishness is an ugly, pervasive thing. I couldn't continue to watch it, so I left. I hope the critters I was forced to leave behind found a kind heart somewhere.
Your piece is beautiful, Kathy.
Very touching Cats. Good job.
A modern-day Francis of Assisi you are!
“Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.”—Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2416
Neglected and homeless animals are truly another sad state of our society's sickness. Great hub.
I loved the poem and the video. It reminds me of what's really important in life. Doesn't it?
Excuse me while I chase a butterfly.
Magick
Amy and T.Sally.
amen to you both :)
Kathy,
I was unhappily unemployed for the past 4 months and really beside myself without cats in my life. Magick is still on the farm but it's cheaper for the company to not pay people to interact with the cats than to pay someone who cared. I call it politics. Then they flagged all my articles. So, I've had a 4 month vacation and I'm ready to move on. I'm studying on line pet grooming and want to care for cats and give them bathes. We'll see how that goes.
Magick and Fire
Lucky Cats (and Amy),
To me, a true sign of someone's character is the way they treat a fur baby. To display such callous and hurtful behavior is a sure sign that we do not need to expose ourselves to this heartache either. I am so glad that both of my good friends are in a much better place now.
This poem and video are so beautiful. Lucky, the mission you have taken on is as inspiring as it gets. The video takes me back to my little Scottie, whose sweet Mamma ran away at such a tender age herself.
I am struck at how much the kity in your lovely new avatar looks like my "bad girl" NINNY! She sure did give my hubby a rough way to go. She was loyal to me, as I had rescued her from abandonment at the State Hospital.
Loved this, girlfriend!
Voted UP, USEFUL, AWESOME & BEAUTIFUL!
Your love for cats oozes out of your poem and profile picture. I once hated cats, because when I was ten my sister's cat killed and ate my pet mouse. But one day a kitten stole my heart. He looked up in my eyes and said, 'Ma-ma'. He became my baby. Years later he died - a motorbike killed him. My pain was unbearable. Also after the death of my second 'baby'. I've decided not to suffer that kind of pain again. That is why I still look the other way when I see a kitten. I just don't want one of them cuties to steal my heart ever again. The cats in the video are too cute. Adorable!
Precious Lucky Cats. Do you realize how much empathy and sincere appreciation there is for your work and your articles on behalf of our feline friends...a mighty host. That's a beautiful icon you've got up now and my what a big and handsome fellow. Deeply, thank you Kathy- and Al.
..well you are a personal hero to me in so many ways - I was just bragging the other day to someone how intelligent and profound I found you as a writer and a thinker ..... I am always thrilled by your comments to me and I am always honored to come here and read your great thoughts and insights ..... in one word Kathy - you are a true hubgem and a classy classy lady.
(hey -!!! that's more than one word - lol - but then again, you're worth it!)
Funny, I linked that same video on my FB page too. The way you wrote that poem it brings attention to the plight of cats on the streets with no where to go. It's truly sad.
Oh Kathy,
I love your poem. I feel so warm and fuzzy to know there are people like you out there that are so compassionate about animal welfare. The video is great. I just saw it a few days ago through a friend's email. So adorable!
I've got to go find my "girls" and hug them a bit now :)
Take care,
Sharyn
What a beautiful hub,so full of warmth and care which says so much about the person who wrote this hub.
I vote up all the way and it is so nice to be back reading your hubs again.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Beautiful and touching. It makes me think of the many mother cats and dogs that were dumped near our house in the country in north Louisiana when I was a child.
It is so sad that now many, many years later people are still abandoning pregnant females.
Like you, we try to help whenever we can.
Voted up and etc.
We discovered Bandita (she has a mask over her eyes) on our front patio two years ago, so thin and emaciated that we thought she might not make it. She was a feral cat, but so starved that she had no strength to flee.
We immediately put out food and water for her, and she stayed. We were toying with the idea of trapping her when I happened to spot movement under a bush…she had a litter! We waited until they were grown enough, and then we trapped all of them and had them spayed and neutered. Two have now accepted me (not my wife, to her dismay!) enough to be petted, one disappeared, and one was found dead.
The survivors are now fat and happy, and live in various places around our home.
